Listen first. Talk later.
February 18th, 2009
I was mistaken about what purpose blogs served. After reading , I’m convinced that blogging is not for talking but listening. Pushing information out there for your consumers doesn’t work in your favor if the conversation is one-sided, which does not go beyond a magazine or TV ad.
In order to take your business to the digital level, you need to get the on-line community engaged in whatever you promote in your blog. And for that you need to be open and welcoming of dissenting views. Of course, you must be thinking, “What about the big corporations? Can they actually be open and honest?” YES THEY CAN! As Scoble and Israel point out, some corporations are already doing this. And even PR specialists such as , CEO of world-renown Edelman Public Relations Agency, are encouraging their clients from all sectors to move their businesses to the blogosphere, where clients can learn from the conversation and improve their practices.
So, keep in mind - Negative comments on your blog do not actually mean your business is going down hill. If you are able to respond personally, truthfully and calmly to even the nastiest comments by readers or to the most absurd demands by consumers, you should be able to turn the tables. Good luck!
